NRG Acoustics A-70: Multi channel audio
Multi channel audio is a technique of enriching the sound processing top quality of any audio source with additional audio channels from audio speakers that surround the audience (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius within the horizontal plane (2D) as an alternative to "screen channels" (middle, [front] left, and [front] right) coming from only on the listener's forward arc.
Surround sound is characterized by a listener position or sweet spot where the audio effects perform the best, and provides a set or frontward perspective of the sound area with the listener around this location. The technique improves the perception of sound spatialization by taking advantage of sound localization; a listener's capability to know the location or origin of a noticed sound in direction and distance. This typically is achieved with the use of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.
There are lots of multi channel audio based types and techniques, varying in reproduction and recording approaches together with the number and placement of more stations.
NRG Acoustics HJ-17: Fields of application
Though cinema and soundtracks represent the major uses of surround approaches, its scope of use is expansive than that as multi channel audio permits creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of functions. Multichannel surround sound techniques are useful to reproduce contents as varied as music, speech, synthetic or natural sounds for cinema, television, broadcasting, or pc systems. When it comes to music content for instance, a live performance could use multichannel approaches to the context of an open-air event, of an musical theatre or perhaps transmissions; for a film particular techniques are adjusted to movie theater, or to residence (e.g. home cinema systems).
The narrative space is also a content that may be improved upon through multichannel approaches. This applies mainly to cinema narratives, as an example the speech of the characters of a film, but might even be used on plays for theatre, to a seminar, or to integrate voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. As an illustration, an exhibition might well be enhanced with topical ambient sound of water, birds, train or machine noise. Topical natural sounds may also be used in educative applications.
NRG Acoustics SG-4 - Several other fields of application contain video gaming units, computers along with other platforms.
In this applications, the content would typically be fabricated noise made by the computer gadget in interaction with its user. Significant work has also been done using multichannel audio for enhanced situation knowledge in army and public safety applications.
