NRG Acoustics A-70: Multichannel surround sound
Surround sound is a method of enhancing the sound processing high quality of any audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener (surround channels), providing sound from a 360 radius in the horizontal plane (2D) compared to "screen channels" (middle, [front] left, and [front] right) coming from only on the listener's forward arc.
Multichannel audio is characterized by a listener position or sweet spot in which the audio effects perform the best, and provides a limited or forward perspective of the sound area towards the listener as of this location. The procedure enhances the belief of sound spatialization by exploiting sound localization; a listener's ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound in route and range. Typically this is achieved by means of multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers.
There are many surround based models and techniques, differing in processing and saving tactics as well as the number and location of additional stations.
NRG Acoustics HJ-17: Areas of application
Though cinema and soundtracks signify the major uses of surround techniques, its scope of application is wider than that as multichannel audio permits creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of purposes. Multichannel audio techniques may be used to reproduce contents as various as music, conversation, natural or synthetic sounds for cinema, television, transmissions, or portable computers. In terms of music material one example is, a live performance can make use of multichannel approaches to the context of an open-air concert, of a musical theatre or even for broadcasting; for a film certain techniques are adapted to cinema, or to home (e.g. home cinema systems).
The narrative area is also a content that can be improved upon through multichannel solutions. This applies mainly to cinema narratives, such as the conversation from the characters of a film, but can be also applied to plays for theatre, to a seminar, or to blend voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. As an example ,, an exhibition might well be enhanced with topical background sound of water, wild birds, train or equipment sound. Applicable natural sounds could also be used in informative programs.
NRG Acoustics SG-4 - Other sorts of fields of application contain gaming units, computers and other platforms.
In this applications, the content would typically be fabricated noise made by the computer device in interaction with its user. Significant work has been specifically done using surround sound for enhanced situation knowledge in military services and public safety applications.
